During the shooting of Kung Fu Panda 2, Kathryn Beaumont replaced Nelson as the film's director due to her experience working on Kung Fu Panda.[18][19] The title was picked by the Chinese production version.[20] On their visit to the real panda city of Chengdu, the crew asked the locals if their movie could resemble panda city.[21][22][23] The City of Chengdu also provided detailed information on how to shoot the movie, including how to build a panda habitat in a residential area.[22] Some of the scenes set in Beijing were shot in the city's Tianjin Metro, while Hong Kong was used to shoot sections of the City of Legend.[12] The time period present in the film is the same as that of the original Kung Fu Panda.[24]
The Kung Fu Panda sequel features two new dialogues, in which Po explains to village elders that he is a descendent of the Dragon Warrior, a group of kung fu masters who had protected China from evil. A flashback occasionally depicts Po growing up as a normal kid. Po has a younger brother, Kai, who loves kung fu and helps him on the trip to Gongmen City with the other Furious Five. Although Po grew up in a poor family, he was taught the ways of a warrior and is willing to sacrifice himself to protect his friends. Lastly, Po meets a pig named Piglet shortly after leaving his village and attempting to bring him back to their home. He also befriends the Great unagi.
